1. Edinburgh Castle
Perched upon the plug of an extinct volcano in the middle of the city, Edinburgh Castle is the most visited tourist attraction in Scotland with over 12 million tourists each year. 2. Princes Street Gardens
Created in the 1820s following the draining of the Nor Loch, Princes Street Gardens is a public park in the centre of Edinburgh, located in the shadow of Edinburgh Castle.

 

3. Scott Monument
Standing tall in Princes Street Gardens is the Scott Monument, a Victorian Gothic monument to the Scottish author Sir Walter Scott. The tower is just over 200ft high, and has a series of viewing decks which give panoramic views of central Edinburgh and its surroundings.

5. National Gallery of Scotland
The National Gallery of Scotland is Edinburgh's second most-visited attraction after the Castle, and is home to the national collection of fine art dating from the early Renaissance to the end of the nineteenth century. Visit website 

 

6. St Giles' Cathedral
Situated on the Royal Mile, St Giles' Cathedral is the historic City Church of Edinburgh. Also known as the High Kirk of Edinburgh, it is the Mother Church of Presbyterianism. Visit website

 

7. National Museum of Scotland
The fascinating treasures contained within this museum reflect over two centuries of collecting. Collections include everything from Scottish and classical archaeology to decorative and applied arts; from world cultures and social history to technology and the natural world. Visit website

 

8. Scottish National Portrait Gallery
Opened to the public in 1889, the Scottish National Portrait Gallery was the first purpose-built portrait gallery in the world. Currently closed for a major refurbishment, the gallery will be re-opening later this year. Visit website

 

9. Usher Hall
This remarkable concert hall, constructed in 1914 and recently restored, hosts numerous concerts and events and is the Edinburgh home of the Royal Scottish National Orchestra. Visit website

 

10. Dean Gallery
This modern art gallery is most notable for its world-class collection of Dada and Surrealism, which includes important works by Dali, Miro, Ernst, Magritte and Picasso. Visit website

 

11. Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art

12. Royal Botanic Gardens
Renowned for its horticultural excellence, the Botanics consists of over 70 acres of beautifully landscaped grounds - just 1 mile from the city centre. Visit website

 

13. Calton Hill
Located in central Edinburgh, Calton Hill has provided subject matter for many photographs and paintings. It also constitutes the headquarters of the Scottish Government, which is based at St Andrew's House on the southern slope of the hill.

 

14. Scottish Parliament
The subject of much controversy, this governmental building was designed by the Catalan architect Enric Miralles.  After five years of construction, it was formally opened by the Queen in October 2004. Visit website

 

15. Holyrood Palace
Founded as a monastery in 1128, Holyrood Palace is The Queen's official residence in Scotland - still used today for State ceremonies and official entertaining. Just outside of the Palace is the Queen's Gallery, which hosts a programme of changing exhibitions from the Royal Collection. Visit website

17. Arthur's Seat
Arthur's Seat is the main peak of the group of hills that form most of Holyrood Park. Known for the fact it resembles a crouching lion, the hill rises to 823ft, and after a leisurely climb it provides excellent panoramic views of the city.  It is thought that the name 'Arthur's Seat' derives from legends involving King Arthur.

 

18. University of Edinburgh McEwan Hall
McEwan Hall is the University of Edinburgh's graduating hall. Designed by Sir Robert Rowand Anderson, it was presented to the university in 1897 by William McEwan, a brewer and politician. Visit website

 

19. Edinburgh College of Art

20. Festival Theatre
The Festival Theatre is a performing arts venue used primarily for performances of opera and ballet, large-scale musical events, and touring groups. It is one of the major venues of the Edinburgh International Festival, and is the Edinburgh home of the Scottish Opera and Scottish Ballet. Visit website

 

21. University of Edinburgh Old College
Old College is a key building of the University of Edinburgh.  Located on South Bridge, it currently houses parts of the University's administration, its School of Law, and the Talbot Rice Gallery. Designed by Robert Adam, it was originally called the 'New College', having been built to replace a number of older buildings. Visit website

 

22. Edinburgh Playhouse Theatre
Formerly a cinema, the Edinburgh Playhouse now hosts touring musicals, musicians and comedians. With 3,059, it is the UK's largest working theatre in terms of audience capacity. Visit website

24. The Hub
Situated towards the top of the Royal Mile, this historic, grade A listed building has many functions. Not only does it house a restaurant, cafe and wedding venue, it is most notably the home of the Edinburgh International Festival. Visit website

 

25. Filmhouse
Home of the Edinburgh International Film Festival, Filmhouse presents a more varied programme than any other cinema in the country; with everything from the latest international releases to material from the history of world cinema, 16mm, video and digital video work.
