Busy Edinburgh

economy

The future for people and businesses in Edinburgh looks bright. The economy is growing steadily, drawing in capital and talent to drive the city forward.

Business is flourishing

The regional economy is growing at a rate of 3% a year and the city’s unemployment rate of 2.4% is lower than the Scottish and UK average. This level of growth is expected to generate around 2300 jobs a year in Edinburgh between 2004 and 2014.

Major financial centre

The economy is service driven, particularly by financial and business services. It is the UK’s second major fund management centre and sixth largest in Europe, with international heavyweights such as the Royal Bank of Scotland, HBOS and Standard Life locating their HQs in the city.

The Edinburgh Science Triangle to the south of the city includes several science parks and the internationally respected Moredun and Roslin Institutes. The latter was where Dolly the Sheep, the first cloned animal, was born in 1996.
