What is Springside?
A new neighbourhood in central Edinburgh with over 600 new homes, 140,000 sq ft of office space, shops and facilities set in an eight acre landscape of parks and open spaces.
Where is it?
In Fountainbridge, half a mile west of Edinburgh Castle. It is next to the Exchange, the city’s business district, and a few minutes walk south of Haymarket railway station.
Why Springside?
The name comes from the springs that rise in this area and that have attracted people to settle here for centuries. A well is recorded on a map of 1855 within the boundaries of what will become a new neighbourhood.
Who is behind it?
Springside is a joint venture between AMA, Grosvenor and the Royal Bank of Scotland. All have a strong record in sustainable city centre regeneration. The masterplan is by Edinburgh architects Oberlanders.
When will it be finished?
All development work is expected to be completed by 2012.
Can I buy an apartment now?
Yes, homes in Jex-Blake House and Inglis Point are available now. Use the home finder or home search facility on the website to view the floor plans, prices and availability.
What other facilities will there be?
Street level shops will be found throughout Springside, together with restaurants, cafes and other local amenities such as doctors, dentists and a creche. Car parking for 600 spaces will be available underground.
What will Springside do for the local economy?
The offices that face onto Fountainbridge will have space for 1,500 jobs, greatly increasing money that can be spent in the area. Over a thousand new residents will also support local business and enterprise.
What sort of place will it be?
More than a third of Springside will be safe green spaces, parks and gardens. The wide tree-lined avenues will make it easy to get across the city, as will a network of well-lit walkways and cycle paths.
What’s happening now on site?
Phase 1 of the development, at the western end of the area, was started in November 2006. The first homes, underground car park and student residences are under construction, with completion expected in 2009.
When will the first homes be finished?
It is expected that the first apartments will be finished in 2009 and the first office block the year after.
How will Springside fit in with the city?
It will be an attractive gateway into Edinburgh connecting the communtites of Bruntsfield and Viewforth into the Exchange, the city’s business district.
