Edinburgh
Standing on the volcanic peak of Arthur’s Seat in Holyrood Park you can look over the city and the many layers of its history.
Looking back and forward
Sitting prominently above all the other rooftops is Edinburgh Castle. The city grew outwards from this central commanding point, into the twisted streets of the medieval Old Town and much later into the planned elegance of the Georgian New Town.
Force for change
Beyond these two World Heritage sites to the north is Leith and the Firth of Forth, to the south west loom the Pentland hills. The water that drove industry and change in the Fountainbridge area originates here.
Seat of power
Below Arthur’s Seat is the Scottish Parliament. Designed by Enrik Miralles and RMJM Scotland it opened in October 2004 and won the RIBA Stirling Prize 2005. The parliament is a symbol of a city that is independent, confident and forward looking.
